But...strangely enough, it looks like it would actually work for some time before leaking or clogging.

As long as it still maintains a water seal.
Any one recall specs on volume of water required to sit as a gas trap?
Only thing bad is the accordion, and of course a twist would fix the angle in a split second.

Non conventional for sure Buck and definately a home owner special....center oulet sink trap shoud have been used imo...sure would have simplified things.....jim
