ohh, ohhh that smell. can't you smell that smell

Yesterday's inspection presented something unusual for me. Upon entering the basement I noticed a relatively strong sulfur smell which appeared to be coming from the sump pit. When I located the pit the cover was broken, laying on the floor near the pit, and the smell was very strong apparently coming from the water. While I've come across sump water that smelled earthy I've never come across this sulfur smell that makde the entire basement, finished basement, smell like sulfur.

Do you think installing a pit cover that completely seals the pit would eliminate this sulfur smell?

I've never seen one that sealed off the pit that well. Surface water is suppose to drain into pit via lid. Might be better idea to find out why their getting ground water that contains sulfur in the pit.
