If a slate roof will last 100+ years, would it be considered to “virtually” last forever? Thanks, Jerry
No. Every material has a lifespan. Slate happens to be so durable that other factors will eventually necessitate a replacement instead of the deterioration of the slate.
When I was young I repaired slate roofs in the New England states, some were over a hundred years old but fasteners failed, some shingles delaminated and they got damageed by ther elements just like any other roof.
My boss told me they were good to 50- 100 years and by then were needing regular maintenance.
Keep in mind there are different thickness and hardness of slate and I remember my boss saying the best sslate came from Vermont (I think).
Is this the roofing forum ? No!
Ahh plumbing vents travel thru the roof;-)
