Default roots in pit

Came across something interesting today. Client said she cleaned out a garbage bag full or tree roots last year in the pit. What do you think is causing this and is it a real concern?

Looks like there's a broken drain tile allowing roots to grow into the tile then to the pit(path of least resistance). That is a sump pit isn't it?

Yes it has several trees close to the exterior. Not close enough that I would consider them a foundation issue, at least 20 feet away, but they were HUGE trees and plenty of them.
