Yes. That is an S-trap.

I had a good felling about that. The house is only 3 years old and the owner said he had a plumbing inspection done (ya right). Thanks for the info from the pros.

What if the only way to drain is through the floor? What if the horizontal piece at the 'p' is longer; doesn't make as sharp an 's' curve?

You can use a "vertical leg" waste fixture if it's allowed in your state.
