Many many years ago on town water we had a element go to ground on a tank and it never shut off .
The first we knew about it was when the Neighbour 500 feet away came over and said he was getting hot water from his tap.
Now with Pressure reducing valves this could have been very exciting when the tank let go.
Old thermostats used to break only one leg of the 240 volt supply .... Roy
