Trying to make a point about bond. Sorry I am being visual.
The entire wall is only locked in with 8 bricks and count 9 courses.
If the bond and wythe was correct it would be locked in every course and give 18 locks. 2 crossed bricks per wythes per ( course.)
Sorry if my math is off.Not an exact count.
Every course would lock and oppose all directional forces.
Hope I made sense Joe.
Give me time I will install technical input with visual illustrations.

I drew a sketch of what I think you are talking about, with the staggered wythes. Its NOT required.

Sorry if the email or post keeps opening. Computer problem and I am fixing it as we speak.
Even if it is not required Mr. O'Conner, might help others reading where required.
I see no masons besides myself on the MB.

Now mesh or ladders would be placed where you need extra support.
Angles and every 4 course.
If not you would use another bond style.
Bond is everything.
Bonds and styles. http://bricklaying.askdefine.com/
Flemish bond

Ruins of Rosewell Plantation, Gloucester County, Virginia, one of earliest works in America in Flemish bond. The bricks were imported from England.

Flemish bond, also known as Dutch bond, has throughout history been considered the most decorative bond, and for this reason was used extensively for dwellings until the adoption of the cavity wall. It is created by alternately laying headers and stretchers in a single course.[4] The next course is laid so that a header lies in the middle of the stretcher in the course below. This bond is two bricks thick. It is quite difficult to lay Flemish bond properly, since for best effect all the perpendiculars (vertical mortar joints) need to be vertically aligned. If only one face of a Flemish bond wall is exposed, one-third of the bricks are not visible, and hence may be of low visual quality. This is a better ratio than for English bond, Flemish bond's main rival for load-bearing walls.
Flemish has been varied in North America. I had English Brickies work for me..
5 stretcher and 1 header course, or 3, 5 is a running Flemish running stretcher.
Here is a link.

The bond is everything.
1.) The color of the masonry will indicate the Foreman's ability to run a gang of men and the quality of the brick, block. stone job.
2.) The tooling ( pointing signature ) will tell you about the masons experience and ability.
That is what I look for first.

Now that is why I come to the message board.
Proper education is so essential.
Nice detail on the info you just posted.
I would never find this in a Code book.
Good Job Robert.
Can you build my walls in SSM when I need a mason?

I will find many common homes built in small towns in Quebec using this very method of brick bonding.
I will go now to my boat and shot some photos.
The detail and craftsmanship was so rich and the pride in a masons work was deeply instilled in me then as it is now..
My last 5 apprentice brickies knew 00000
All paid 100 dollars instead of going to school; or accumulation time on the job..
I learned this after I pressed them.
I left them retain their cards.
I wished them all the best in life and that I had no use for them.
The union reeks or bribes and mob ties in Quebec.
A commoner home would have-that workmanship like that also Mr. Wood.

Gees louse Kevin.
That style of corduroy brown 2 tone brick and the pointing or tooling method are bylaw-ed in Quebec.
You Ontario guys are the biggest producers of clay bricks in Canada.
HA HA HA.
Hope you do not use that tooling method anymore.
If I remember right, you stop producing that brick and or shipping it to Quebec in the mid 1980's.
I will find some fact based info Keven.

Very true ... and it's been a while since I have had bricks in my hands. I miss the satisfaction of seeing a completed chimney or fireplace I built. But I dont miss the sores/holes on the tips of my fingers ...

I really admire the masonry work the Romans did ... Its amazing to know the master craftsmanship that went into building those structures for that period of time. It's even more amazing that some are still standing.

Here is a site that has a lot of good info on brick construction ... http://www.gobrick.com/
