Default bracing

This is a rafter construction, with no cross supports. I would think you would need for strength. House is about 40 yrs. Built like this. Would this not be an issue? What are the supports proper terminology? Also, they cut out the floor joist to put in attic stairs? Again is this an issue to be addressed?
Thanks
