Column to beam junctions

I have recently seen a house where the contactors used wood blocking (2X6) between a wood beam and metal column. It appears the blocking was used to reduce the length of the exposed threading on the adjustable column. Everything appears to be attached securely with lag bolts through the plates into the beam. Does anyone know a reference for acceptable practice or for calling it out as a deficiency? Comments and thoughts are welcome.

Non-shrink, non-compressible steel, slate etc. from memory. Wood…nope.

Adjustable columns are not allowed to be used as permanents supports in many jurisdictions, which would make your question somewhat moot. Where are you located?
