I agree with you there, Jeff. Architectural Graphic Standards uses "footing". It's the standard source for terminology used by architects and engineers. The IRC, IBC, basically all formal reference sources use "footing".

Hey! What do you call the framing members in a window or doorway that butt up underneath each end of the header? You know... the "trimmer".

And then there's the rafter that rests against a hip at it's top and against a valley at it's bottom? You know... the "hip/valley cripple jack".
