Hi. Bob;

99.9% sure Bob.

A separation that far would enable you to run a wire vertically in the crack and feel rebar if it is in there.

Most likely you will not find any, because typical and standard corner hook bars are two feet by two feet long #4 in size or a #5 that would be 30" long on both legs.

The only way for rebar on a corner to allow this to happen, would be to actually spall the concrete on each side and pick up some slack as it stretches.

One of these would also reinforce ones findings.

The MT6 metal locator finds both ferrous and nonferrous metal and indicates depth up to 6 inches (152 mm) deep.

Mr Marcel may indeed be correct. When we`ve seen cracks like this
its been due to lack of/or omission rebar, but also sometimes a footing
for porch etc that can lean-push on wall, sometimes in one spot
sometimes both(where footing meets/is against bsmt wall)

And sometimes the footing may lean/push,slip,drop-settle due to soil underneath
one or both footing edges settling or on new/newer homes, chtt
compaction. Luckily here, it 'seems' not much/if any lateral soil pressure
has taken over, caused further problems.Roots can also pose problems
in walls or with differential soil settlement underground, under footings etc.

Could also be possible crack has been there since/right after home was built due to
way this wall or area of wall was backfilled or heavy equipment too close and crack
has not widened much, just saying its possible, especially if they skimped on rebar
in this area of wall. Have seen new/newer homes have just 1 maybe 2 vertical
cracks due way wall was backfilled or heavy equipment or even compaction of the
soil in coming months(though usually not as wide)

Marcel/some others may have also seen a vertical crack in a wall and have the
OPPOSITE wall have same/similar crack...got milk?

Licensed and insured structural engineer. At least in Illinois a professional engineer (Designation, P.E.) is not qualified for structural issues.

My brother is a P.E., but he doesn't know ths slightest thing about residential foundations (according to him).

Just trying to clarify, for Illinois. Different areas have different requirements.

What dried beef?

Bob, I remember, what happened and why won't it sell?

You know, I was thinking about that the other night and wondered why you did not keep that up. Your the one that made me start A little on the Commercial side.
Maybe you should revive Peters A little on the Residential Side and continue.

I think members like that and new members learn in the process.

Curious.

I guess I should Marcel.
I had just started posting here and had been on AR before that where I was getting 70 views within the first 15 minutes at times so I thought there was no interest here.
Still have more pics and should do it again.
Good idea.

Will... you did say use a Slim Jim.

Bob;

Consider the context:

Slim Jim ( bad beef jerky). How could this be interpreted as a means to steal a car?

OH, I get it. It was a joke

Sorry, I can be a little slow.

Hey Marcel, I think I'll start posting picture again. Once I finish the garage I'm building, then the finished basement, we will be back at Alan's job which we will have to install about 150 square of siding, 2500 feet of fascia and soffit and 16 decks. But when I'm done with that we have a 24X32 second story addition to do on lake front property, then a 26X55 second story addition which we are going to convert a ranch into a four bedroom with three baths. We are booked into the end of September and have more work coming in. So much for the recession!

That would be nice Peter and I hope you don't mind me offering Bob Elliot a chance to share his experiences on the same post. I kind of get a kick out of him. He is funny.

Some of the Members all like this proactive approach and is good for the organization.

Believe me, we need all the help we can get.

I got Roy Cooke back on my Awards Committee, so I feel a lot better.

Thanks and hope you stay busy.

I have got a week left on my job and they are bringing me to another ongoing project. So when I demobilize, I will be out of contact during the day.

Take care

Marcel
