Have you run into this before and what might be the thought on installing these posts in this fashion?

The problem isn't that they appear upside down but that those are temporary telescoping posts not meant for permanent installation.

right... that goes without saying... but just curious as to why they would install this way to begin with...

That's typically the way I see them. The other end has tabs for gripping the I beam.
