I'm assuming that the article was written for home inspectors. If so, you should add a heading "Identification of Wood Decay" that tells us homies how to spot it. You know what, you're right. The section that describes brown and white rot can be used for identification but the best way is to use a probe, such as a screwdriver. Also, it's important to know how to tell the difference between decay and insect damage. I'll be updating it soon.

In NC, the SOP states that all wood decay must be confirmed by probing.
