Inspection Education & Training This is a general forum for inspectors to discuss their educational experience, and to ask questions of InterNACHI's Education Committee. This forum is dedicated to the memory of InterNACHI member and educator Gerry Beaumont. Gerry was an avid proponent of education for inspectors and will be sorely missed.

I concur.

Some of the questions on the exam is weak, and I would love to see them get rid of the nonsense answers, but the beauty of it is that one can take it over and over and over again. If one is unsure about an answer, one can do research to find out.

And, with apologies to my alma mater (Texas A&M, whose sports teams never lose; they just run out of time), you didn't fail, you simply ran out of time to reivew your answers and make sure they all were correct.

Are you still here, Dan? Surely you have better things to do with your life.

Nonetheless, I seriously doubt that someone who would come and admit that they failed the exam would hire someone to take it for them and then lie on their paperwork about it.

You really disappoint me, Dan. Rarely have I come across someone as negative as you seem to be. I think you should seek professional help for what troubles you.

WOW!!!!
Did I start a big problem? Really what I am asking is #1: Do you now recommend a course?, and #2: Which one? I have been online and there are way to many to choose from and I would love to have some advice on this. Let me give you some background though. First, I am a general contractor now with my own business doing remodeling and dryrot repair. I have been offered a very cush position with a property management company that, as a service for its clients, inspects the properties twice a year to help protect the investment. So,as far as doing this as a business, that is not the primary focus, although, doing that on the side is absolutely something I will pursue. So, with that in mind, dare I ask, what should I do now?

hkcon,

Take my advice in my first post to you, let your heart be your guide and understand this is a good industry and a tough one to compete in since their are alot of people doing it.

Regardless of which organization you choose to join remember the organization does not make the inspector...the inspector makes the inspector and you will get help from other inspectors at this forum, and in your area regardless of the organization.

I was just in Sacramento, CA and met some great inspectors and I am sure many of them are and would be willing to help you if you choose to build a home inspection business.

As for mentoring....you get that with every organization and in many ways.....the inspector who worries about helping other inspectors is an inspector who is worried about his business model....most are secure in their business and are willing to help you.

A mentoring SYSTEM is fine but if the inspectors doing the mentoring are not worth crude it would not matter now would it.....so my suggestion is do some reading, study what you feel is your weakness and listen to people with positive advice.....not those that have political agenda's.

Approximately 52% of the first timers fail the NACHI exam. Those that take it over and over again and fail to pass join ASHI!

All you need is $$, and NO TEST at all. After you f-ck over 250 unsuspecting home owners / clients you can take the ASHI test, {NHIE!}

The answers are for sale on E-Bay!

I'll be..... I learned something new today, guess I'll have to retrieve fido from guarding the chicken coop and have him take the quiz so I quit "screwing" up on my inspections..

Hkon... on a serious note, if your serious about learning more about this profession consider making the investment and attend the largest HI convention in Jan in Southern Cal.
You will meet over 1,000 new and experience inspectors and many of them will be from your home state...In addition to the valuabale info you will receive from the inspectors you will find vender that provide HI training, tools and I believe "Ken" will be there as well demostrating his soft ware.

I am sure that Fido can pass the NHIE. It is a no brainer.

Here is a list of educational materials that has helped me a great deal:

PRINCIPLES OF HOME INSPECTION - Systems & Standards

Electrical Inspection of Existing Dwellings by Hansen, Kardon, & Casey

Report Writing for Home Inspectors is a must read, and is great info for avoiding lawsuits!

Once you've read the close to 900 pages of PRINCIPLES OF HOME INSPECTION - Systems & Standards then start talking to people you know in the trades. If you're having trouble with HVAC, find a HVAC guy that will take you out on some maintenance calls. When getting info from the specific trades it's good to remind them that you will only be doing visual inspections of the readily available parts of each system, so ask them to help you identify problems in this way. Get them to think in terms of inspecting the system and identifying problems as a home inspector would rather than giving you solutions to fixing problems (which is what they are trained to do). Offer to buy them lunch, pack their tools around, whatever it takes to get them to let you tag along. You can learn a great deal in a short amount of time this way. I've talked with HVAC, carpenters, masons, architects, plumbers, electricians, the gas company, the power company, city building inspectors. Generally, I've found that the older guys know more, and if you get a personable one, are more willing to spend the time.

Good Luck!

Go to the bottom of the homepage of www.nachi.org Click on the frame (PIC) to enlarge it. Study it. Then hit your own REFRESH button to go to the next educational frame.

I think these 2,500+ frames (which are open and free to all) are one of the best educational tools in existence.
