| Inspection Education & Training This is a general forum for inspectors to discuss their educational experience, and to ask questions of InterNACHI's Education Committee. This forum is dedicated to the memory of InterNACHI member and educator Gerry Beaumont. Gerry was an avid proponent of education for inspectors and will be sorely missed. |

Western Suffolk BOCES recently received approval from NACHI to endorse our continuing education program in home inspection. The following is the course description. For more information on this course, visit our website www.wilsontech.org/registration/display.cfm?code=0733 For additional information, please call 631-667-6000 X320 Home Inspection-Building Science, Continuing Ed. This 3-part course is designed to fulfill the continuing education requirement for the Home Inspector, but it may also be interesting for a homeowner or ‘do-it-yourselfer’. The class begins with building science and the “house as a system approach”. It covers thermodynamics, heat transfer, moisture evaluation, indoor air quality issues, air and vapor barriers, proper construction methods, heat loss and energy saving measures. It is the basis for the Energy Starprograms that are currently in place, and which will be required in new construction in several townships on Long Island starting in 2008. The second part of the course consists of a discussion of the thermal boundary, the different types of insulation, how they work and their proper installation. It covers how to inspect for thermal bypasses and how to correct them by air sealing methods. The proper ways to insulate attics, exterior walls, basements and crawl spaces to prevent excessive heat loss and moisture concerns, weather stripping windows and doors, lighting, and how to evaluate buildings for proper R-valve and U-value using scientific testing methods. Class 3 starts with a discussion on high efficiency heating and hot water systems, as well as ventilation systems. It will cover furnaces, boilers, geo-thermal, and additional heating methods, with an emphasis on energy saving methods on heating and cooling the house. You will learn how to properly size them using Manual J and Manuel D calculations. You will be able to determine if the house is too “tight”, and the correct ventilation methods to provide proper air quality and humidity levels inside the house. High efficient hot water heaters will be covered, as well as indirect storage tanks. Cooling loads will also be discussed, and how to inspect duct systems for air leakage. Student questions and participation is encouraged. The classes will be offered twice a week in the evenings, 6:00pm-9:30pm.
