I put DDT in the same category as Alar on apples. Yes, both are harmful. No doubt about it. But the world would be better with both. Less malaria (which kills 3 million people a year), more apples (food for people). An apple is so good for you (in terms of increase of life expectancy) that eating an Alar coated apple is better for your health than not eating it. And way better if you are starving.

Guns accidentally kill about 1,200 children in the U.S a year. But the world is much better off with them, as guns in the hands of citizens save tens of millions of people (including children) by thwarting tyranny.

You have to look at the good and bad in everything and weigh it. It just so happens that banning DDT, banning Alar, and banning guns is so overwhelmingly bad (on balance) that a scale is not even needed. It's nowhere near a close call.

I should disclose that 100% of my grocery shopping is done at a Whole Foods store and most of what I eat is organic. I also drink raw milk, straight from an organically fed cow, regularly. It is illegal to sell unpasturized milk so you can only get it legally from a cow if you own a piece of the cow. I lived at a Camphill Village for 3 years at a farm where we produced Seven Stars organic yogurt from cows that lived in my yard.

My son, a senior in high school, has arranged to do his work study project back in Pennsylvania at Kimberton Hills. He will be returning there as a volunteer for 3 weeks this Spring. The NACHI Foundation raised money for Kimberton Hills several years ago and member Gary Johnson, who ran the NACHI Foundation, was honored at a dinner there.

I can't change the political systems of poorer countries where corruption rules and people starve as our aid money is diverted to the leaders but I can hopefully change crap going on in my own backyard. ...and I still support the aid going as some may get through.

I don't know how your kids are raised but I have two and both want to work in third world countries (one in college this year and the other next year). They'll most likely never be rich but I hope they will have full, satisfying lives.
My daughter (in high school 95%+ average, volunteer to Big brothers/sisters and others, bball team starter) is working 2-3 shifts every weekend saving for a trip (she has to pay) to Costa Rica next summer to help build houses.

So DDT and Alar are OK but NIMBY? Shame on You!

I used to have a large organic garden but haven't since I moved and now live in the land of rock!!! Wish I could afford the organic food prices.

Some things (vaccines come to mind) are on balance a good thing in third world countries (just like DDT is) but would not be a positive thing in healthier, modern countries that don't need to rely on vaccines or DDT for survival.

Vaccines in poor countries do more good than harm, while vaccines in wealthy countries do more harm than good. Same vaccine.
