"Who did the pushing?"
A rhetorical question. One of the lawyers who launched a class action against these institutions to force them to hand out loans is presently running for the office of President. |

The bailout bill is even more a turkey than I thought.
Senate Passes Greener Financial Bailout Late Wednesday night the U.S. Senate voted to pass the $700 billion financial industry bailout, now sugarcoated with a number of tax incentives, including tax credits for renewable energy. The Senate passed the package 74 to 25, and it now goes on to the House. Passage of the bill means the production and investment clean energy tax credits (PTC and ITC), which are so vital for the wind and solar energy industries, are a step closer to being renewed. The hope is that the bundle of tax breaks for businesses and individuals will draw Republican votes in the House. However, these tax breaks could also displease fiscally conservative Democrats. The Democratic Blue Dog Coalition only supports legislation that fully offsets its own costs and they’ve voted against extensions of the PTC and ITC that didn’t include appropriations. The House is set to come back into session tomorrow and should vote on the amended bill before the end of the week. ------------------------------- That's right folks, they have added some green lipstick to this pig in an attempt to pass the "rescue plan". Wonder if anyone in the House of Representatives will read this now 410 page monstrosity? "Never underestimate the difficulty of changing false beliefs by facts." |

With 70% of our "foreign" oil coming form Canada and the imminent contraction of the U.S. economy along with falling oil prices, you boys in Canada are likely to see increased taxes to make up for lost revenue.
Hope you enjoy the ride. "Never underestimate the difficulty of changing false beliefs by facts." |

I haven't figured out our long term debt /person yet but did a calculation based on some figures seen in an article referred to on the boards. It seems that every man, woman, child in your country now owes about $34,000 based on a $12.3+ trillion debt after the bailout. Am I close? Don't worry, I believe ours is higher!!! So why tax to bring it down??? |

Climate Change:
The problem with this subject matter is that we all rely on information provided by concerned scientist - biassed politicians - and/or profit-oriented industry representative - to form our own opinion how serious the suspected Global Warming actually is. The catastrophic financial crisis in the US is a revealing example what can develop if warning signs are being ignored or suppressed to pacify the public at large for whatever reason. Only weeks ago - so-called financial experts and their believing followers - have declared the US economy as being fundamentally strong and sound. RUDOLF REUSSE - TORONTO |

The US economy is strong. Does that mean it's immune from economic cycles and recession? NO. We are currently a long way from a crumbling and desperate economy. It has proved amazingly resilient and is very good at reinventing itself. This current "financial crisis" can be attributed to government meddling in the free market. Fortunately we have, and by latest indicators, will continue to have a Conservative government here in Canada. You might be interested to know, Micheal, that the leader of the Liberal party in Canada is only a part time Canadian! He has Canadian and French citizenship ( French as in Paris France). Where else in the world, but Canada, would a foreign national be running for the big chair?

They just don’t get it During a week where Americans were focused on perhaps the greatest economic challenges this country has faced in over a generation, House Democrats released a set of principles on October 2nd that outline an aggressive plan to cap greenhouse gas emissions. (See: “House Dems claim 152 supporters for aggressive cap-and-trade plan” – October 3, 2008 – LINK - Subscription Required) The plan could be even more economically restrictive than the failed Lieberman-Warner Climate Security Act, which would have cost $6.7 trillion dollars, according to the bill’s own sponsors. That $6.7 trillion cost would have been passed on to families and workers across the country in the form of higher gas prices, higher electricity and heating/cooling bills, more expensive consumer goods, and higher workplace costs. As we learned during this past summer’s debate on the failed Lieberman-Warner global warming cap-and-trade bill and with the recent victory on offshore drilling, the appetite of the American people to unlock America’s affordable energy resources is very strong. When it comes to being in touch with Americans, the House Democrats need a reality check. The current financial crisis only reinforces the public’s wariness about any climate bill that attempts to increase the costs of energy and jeopardizes jobs. Category:The Rank Hypocrisy of the Save the Planet for the Animals Elitists
Around the World: A Private Jet Expedition April 6 - 30, 2009 From $64,950 See the brochure (pdf) Trip Overview Join us on a remarkable 25-day journey by private jet. Touch down in some of the most astonishing places on the planet to see the top wildlife, including gorillas, orangutans, rhinos, lemurs and toucans. Explore natural and cultural treasures in remote areas of South America, the South Pacific, Southeast Asia and Africa. To reach these remote corners, travel on a specially outfitted private jet that carries 88 passengers. World-class experts – including WWF's director of species conservation – will provide a series of lectures en route, and a professional staff will be devoted to making your global adventure seamless and memorable. As Paul Harvey says-The Rest of the Story So how does this fantasy trip square with the WWF’s alarmist rhetoric? Using the carbon footprint calculator on the WWF’s own web site, the 36,800-mile trip in a Boeing 757 jet will burn about 100,000 gallons of jet fuel to produce roughly 1,231 tons of CO2 in 25 days — that’s the equivalent of putting about 1,560 SUVs on the road during those three-plus weeks and that doesn’t even include emissions related to local air, ground and water transport and other amenities. The WWF laments on its web site that the average American produces 19.6 tons of CO2 annually, which is nearly five times the world average of 3.9 tons per person. But during the WWF’s posh excursion, travelers will produce 14 tons of CO2 per person. That’s 71 percent of the average American carbon footprint and 360 percent of the average global footprint in a mere three-and-one-half weeks. But who’s counting — especially when you’re in “19 rows of spacious leather seats with full ergonomic support” enjoying “gourmet meals, chilled champagne [and] your own chef.” I guess those are the rules when you’re one of WWF’s wealthy donors, but now contrast this with the how the WWF says the rest of us should live our lives. The group’s web site states that “It clearly is time for all Americans to roll up their sleeves, to take steps to reduce emissions, to prepare for climate change, and to encourage others to do the same.”
