Where are Barney Frank and Chris Dodd and Obama?

It was McCain that warned that the Fannie mae and Freddie mac who held the underlying mortgage paper where about to be in trouble and called for stricter underwriting criteria that Frank and Dodd opposed.

Every attempt to reign in these two quasi government entities was resisted by their friends the Democrts who used it as a social program.

Well all I can say is proof is in the pudding. In Canada the banks are regulated and the result is our banks are in the best condition of all the banks in the G8. It's not a case of more or less government, it's a case of balance that protects us all and provides a level playing field for fair and open competition.

Correcting Ocean Cooling: NASA Changes Data to Fit the Models

NASA scientist, Josh Willis, was so concerned that his data, showing ocean cooling, did not fit the official consensus on climate change that he searched for a solution. Eventually he “applied a correction” so the historical ocean temperature record showed a relatively steady increase in line with the climate models.

Perhaps Dr Willis really did get it wrong between 2003 and 2005 when his data showed a large decrease in the heat content of the ocean. But after reading his justification for the correction, I am not convinced. Indeed and I am left wondering how to ever trust the official temperature record again.

According to analysis by Tufts economist Gilbert Metcalf, stripping out the subsidies, the regulatory distortions and the taxes, the “levelized cost” of building a new conventional coal-fired power plant (that is, the cost associated with building the plant and buying coal over the lifetime of the plant divided by the energy output that one might expect from the facility over its lifetime) works out to cost 3.10 cents per kWh to build.

By means of comparison:

• a new clean coal plant costs 3.53 cents per kWh,
• a nuclear power plant costs 4.57 cents per kWh,
• a wind power plant costs 4.95 cents per kWh,
• a biomass-fired power plant costs 4.96 cents per kWh,
• a natural gas power plant costs 5.29 cents per kWh,
• a solar thermal power plant costs 13.84 cents per kWh, and
• a solar photovoltaic power plant costs 26.64 cents per kWh.

I'm confused Vern. With massive Government intervention such as you champion, how can we have a "level playing field for fair and open competition"? The fact is, that Canadian Banks are in such good shape because we did not have a liberal government mandating the loaning of vast quantities of cash to people who never had a hope of repaying it. In the U.S. the Democrats used the banking system as a source of cash to buy the votes of the working poor and in the process condemned them to bankruptcy.

Bailouts and Planned Our Economy

As our political leaders discuss bailouts for the auto industry they appear determined to include mandates that tell business what to produce.
That is sure to include more "green" cars that no one wants to buy and that someone else can produce at lower cost anyway.

The SUVS Detroit has been making for teh last 20 years have been where the profits have come to pay for the lucrative UAW contracts.

They cannot do that with "green" cars.

A. Too expensive

B. Limited demand

C. Poor utility for customer's needs

Forcing the automakers to produce cars their customers don't want at prices they won't pay is a recipe for disaster in our new centrally planned economy.

You may have heard of the Chevy Volt.

$40,0000 but the government will give you an $8,000 credit.

40 miles on a six hour charge.

That should explain all you need to know about what is ahead for all of us.

That fact is Detroit would not be in this predicament if our dumba*s politicians had encouraged more drilling and refining capacity to keep oil prices down.

Instead they are captive to the agenda of the "green" crowd that really wants all of us to ride bicycles, crap in the woods and wipe our sorry rear ends with moss.

BTW ML, have you heard of the WI Sierra Club chapter's laughable alternative proposal for that distaterous coal power plant proposal? The one that asserts that we can replace the plant with a +$2 billion network of solar panels along our low solar output state.
