Professional Liability Insurance

It seems that not many Canadian insurance underwriters are interested in providing reasonable E&O coverage to the relatively small number of home inspectors operating in Canada. The risk versus the profit is simply not in favour of the insurance providers.

It would be interesting to find out how colleagues operating in British Columbia or Alberta have solved the problem after E&O insurance became mandatory in their respective provinces.

If the proposed licensing of Ontario home inspectors should actually materialize, it is very important that representatives of the home inspection industry involved in the process insist, that the Ontario government has to provide access to reasonable E&O insurance coverage to all future licensees.

Home inspectors who already have E&O insurance should restrain themselves from advertising the advantage. Firstly it is not professional, and secondly it is an open invitation to conniving customers to file frivolous claims. I still have to find an advertisement where a lawyer, doctor or accountant reveals to the public at large, that he or she carries **Professional Liability Insurance. **
