TSSA Ends Quality Assessed Contractors Program

After a run of eight years, Ontario’s Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) has decided to end its “Quality Assessed Contractor” (QAC) program. The voluntary, fee-for-service program provided HVAC contractors with training and consulting services and had the intent of raising the level of professionalism and technical knowledge in the industry. Contractors that went through the QAC process were permitted to identify themselves as Quality Assessed with the assistance of a special logo.
In making its decision, TSSA noted that the QAC program had attracted only a limited number of contractors (200 at its peak) during its lifespan. An internal program review determined that “the program itself gained insignificant market appeal to viably continue and maintain.”
Contractors registered in the program will be allowed to finish the term of their contracts, which will expire in 2007. Thereafter, they will be prohibited from identifying themselves as Quality Assessed or from using TSSA logos or symbols.
