Deck joists that cantilever out past the deck posts, should never overhang the girder they rests on by more than what?

Typically, it is L/4 not exceeding 3'. 1/3 The joist length. So a 12' joist can cantilever 4'. 6' joist 2' etc.. But check with your local building dept.
