Default What type of pipe is this?

Could you please help me identify this pipe and what it would have been used for, the house was built in the early 30 's ( Lake county ILLINOIS
the pipe comes up out of the floor . and it is about 6-7 ft from an out side wall. We would like to get rid of it or cut it down so we dont trip on it . But are worried it could be and old gas line. or ??? Any ideas on how to handle this would truley be appreciated.
thank you
Connie

Looks like you may have a buried fuel tank under the floor.
