Good day James and John,

If I may, I must say that the Thermography may not be perfect but it reassures the clients and brokers.
I show all what we see, I explain that it helps us see a little bit more.

Actually it is kind of nice to see in the dard places precisely where there may or may not be a problem.

I was seriously going to get a blower door but revised my decision when I realysed that the blower door also was not perfect.

Unless sealing attic hatch with possibility of vermiculyte and fireplace ashes with soot and also making sure no fluorescent bulbs (containing led) had been broken and not well picked up to name a few, could contaminate the whole house.

We must respect local, provincial, federal laws and In Quebec only an owner or a master Electrician can unscrew the front of a breaker panel.
The thermo cam allows me to follow laws, see if there is overheating and red flag it if needed.

Remember that the Infrared camera (heat sensing) is the visual extension of your hand and the big advantage is that you do not have to get electrocuted by flash or other.
Not perfect but now that I use this technology, I would prefer not to do without it.

All the best to you both!

Salut from BMAinspection.com from majority French speaking Brossard Quebec poulation.

IMHO, in most cases, it will impress the client and brokers. We see the odd picture where it found termite galleries, a rodent nest or a warm/hot breaker.

Thousands of blower doors have been inthe field since as far back as 1980. There has been no evidence that I know of that they create general contamination in homes. If a home is not properly prepared, a problem may occur, but that is not the fault of the depressurization technique but the practitioner. I think someone has scared you into this belief!

That law needs to be changed!! If an unknowledgeable homeowner can remove the panel cover and a well trained HI with voltage sensing/testing equipment and arc flash training is not allowed to...... (well....I leave everyone to add their own ending to this sentence)

Remember that the Infrared camera (heat sensing) is the visual extension of your hand and the big advantage is that you do not have to get electrocuted by flash or other.
How can you tell if: there are double taps in a panels that does not allow them, burnt insulation that only gets worse when the maximum loads are being carried, wires being protected by oversized OCPD's, etc, etc?

Not perfect but now that I use this technology, I would prefer not to do without it.

All the best to you both!

An IR imager is an addition to the senses we have, but it cannot do a proper electrical "inspection" of a home....there is no SOP set up for this, we don't load circuits with resistance to determine if a problem exists or may occur over a period of time as the circuit draws higher current......for example "glowing connections"

It appears that Nick started this post in June of 2010. Does anyone know how many CMI's are in the US, today? How many in Canada?

Now that the cost is $1,000... I expect that it will stay at 415 for some time.

We have 13 CMI's in Alberta or 1 CMI per 277,000 people. The same ratio in Canada would mean 111 CMI's in Canada and 1110 in the US.

Personally,

I enjoy and sell IR inspection services.

I use an IR camera to reassure the client on the property he has chosen to purchase. I agree with James when he says that 20 inspectors may produce 20 reports.
Around and in Brossard-Quebec-Canada, most of my inspection work is for pre purchase.
Not all that is seen during the inspection is included in the reports but when I leave the house, I am satisfied that my client knows the property better.
I use my hand to show that a surface is warm or cold, then if out of reach I can either use a IR pointer but I prefer using my IR Camera.

The one everybody has heard about and expect to see.

Different strokes for different folks! I was able to discover and test wwith IR cameras and enjoy this technology greatly.
I feel I would be doing my clients wrong not to use this more and more attainable technology.

Thank you John for the IR introductions and I welcome more courses and demos to demonstrate some of the advantages of this technology.

Clients like the links on my inspectionbmainspection.com and I hope to have some of the same available on our NACHI members sites.

Just wondering why the AIBQ would have the following in their Standards of Practice:

*Art. 38 The inspector shall open main service boxes and distribution panels when it is safe to do so. If he cannot open these, he shall indicate the reasons in his inspection report*???

Certified Master Inspector and proud of it! I earned this title and very proud to be in this class of people. I salute all who have this title and worked so hard and studied so hard to educate themselves to obtain this title that shows dedication to the profession which clearly states that Home Inspectors are trained to know all fields of The Study of Building Science. This is a field that you will never know it all and without Continuing Education you will fail, it is a must to keep adding courses to your resume. Let me thank InterNACHI for the Education they offer it is truly The Best of The Best.

"Thank You Nick!"

So Nick... Just curious. How many are there in the world today? How often is the list updated? I attempted to contact a CMI to refer business to (out of my area) about a year ago, (email and voice mails) and no response whatsoever from him. Have to wonder if he is out of business, but still on the list. How would you know unless he told you???
