Kevin,
Energy reports are all about saving energy and being green. So your report should reflect that also. Sometimes it is not what you like but what the client likes and expects. Having one paragraph on one page is a waste of paper and a waste of resources. Remember most of the time it is the little things that set one inspector apart from the next. Chuck |

Thanks for the input. I respect Will or any other Inspector that posts their report online to be reviewed by their piers. Everyone is going to have a slightly different writing or formatting style. How about posting an Energy Report that you have created? Kevin Kevin A. Kevin,
Energy reports out here in California are very few and far between. The climate here is very mild unlike your area or William's area. The cost varriance in energy between winter and summer are very negligable. However the call does come in every so often for them. I tried to attach one of my first reports it was too big so I emailed it to you. Alot was learned and alot has changed since that report. The writing/reporting style is short and sweet no fluff. My area of IR has shifted from homes to commercial and heavy industry where things are more 'black and white' Chuck Last edited by Chuck Lambert; 2/2/10 at 11:11 AM.. |

However, I received your report. Thanks!! I'm sure we can learn from one another. I'm all about absorbing as much information I can. I conduct a fair amount of Commercial Infrared Inspections as well. Your right, they are less complicated as far as dealing with the clientele (less emotions involved). Take Care, Kevin Kevin A. Kevin,
I think you posted a link to the new Home Guage energy auditing reporting software. Are you using it? If so what do you think of it? I talked to the owner of Home Guage about the software and he said he was currently in talks with RemRate about incorporating their modeling software in to Home Guage. I really liked the ability to incorporate the CAZ numbers in to the report. I want to start recommending this product to customers, but I am interested to see what others think first. Home Guage makes a great product already for the HI side of things, so I think their energy auditing software will end up being excellent as well. Thanks, JJ |

Chuck,
This is a little off topic, but if you are already doing duct blaster testing you have another avenue out there now. As of Jan 1st in California new requirements apply when replacing the air handler, the outdoor condensing unit of a split system air conditioner or heat pump, cooling or heating coil, or the furnace heat exchanger. And these alterations must be verified by a 3rd party that is a HERS rater. In addition to that if the system is altered in anyway or recharged (either or both) those the duct system must also be verified by a HERS rater. And finally duct sealing will be required when changing out HVAC equipment in existing residential buildings. I believe if the installation includes all new equipment and ductwork, the rater must verify the airflow in the system is at least 350 cfm per nominal ton and the wattage for the fan is equal to or less than 0.58 watts per cfm. These are all part of new Title 24 changes. JJ |

JJ, The new HG Energy Template is awesome, and I really like the spreadsheet addition. It has a built-in CAZ section and a stand along CAZ template. One of the cool things that Russell has incorporated in the CYA section, is very specific step by step instructions for completing an audit per BPI Standards. Here is a sample Energy Report written with the new Template: www.richnspect.com/Sample_Reports/Sample_Energy_HG.pdf Kevin Kevin A. I would like to add my 2 cents for what its worth:
1. Where are the blower door results? Was a bd test done on the home? 2. Was the home modeled in energy simulation software? Were house measurements taken to model properly? 3. Upgrade recommendations do not seem to offer many options. Where is the info for the customer on payback times for various upgrades? 4. Where is the list of upgrades prioritized into levels of importance? 5. Was a heating system efficiency test done? 6. Exhaust depressurization test done if there are combustion appliances in the home? 7. Was the h/o given any literature to aid in the decision making process of upgrades? I'm not trying to beat the tar out of the report, it just seems to me that it doesn't leave the h/o many options or explanation of what to do, or where to start first. I have personally done over 500 energy evaluations, and each and every report includes at a minimum all of the above. My experience has taught me that if you don't show a h/o what they have now, and what they'll get after upgrades for performance in their home, they tend not to do much at all. There, thats my 2 cents for now.
