The Chinese regularly pump out fake U.S. silver dollars. They look just like the real thing but are not made of all silver. I have a bunch (yes, I got snookered). I've already convinced myself that I can detect these counterfeits with an IR camera and a kitchen oven.

I don't think I read the whole thread correctly. I just went to the oven to check on the Silver Certificates I put in about thirty minutes ago and I am sure they are Chinese copies, as all that are left is ashes.

I would think the Fed would want to know that Nick.

P.S. Please don't use these for the daily door prizes.

Different alloys and content has different thermal mass. It would be hard to determine because the emissivity is only measured on the surface (silver plated rather than pure silver) with any underlying substrate metal conducting.

Much easier ways of deteriming purity. Determine volume of coin (water emersion) then determine weight and calculate density. Look up density in the CRC and determine the difference.

But your way is much more fun, Nick.

Does the reverse work? If you freeze them?

The coins, not the cookies.

Oh heck Richard, now I'll be emptying my freezer tonight so I can test.

Guess I'll be eating 8 frozen dinners tonight.
