Impermeable or low-permeable wall assembly materials which prevent moisture from drying to the outside through diffusion can raise indoor humidity to unhealthy levels. Absorbent materials can help prevent high and low humidity swings by adsorbing and releasing moisture.
This paper runs 20 pages and covers the basics well, although it's a little on the tech side. It's a report comparing the hygroscopic (water absorbing) properties of various materials, particularly Cement Bonded Wood Fiber foundation systems. Also covers basic Indoor Air Quality well.
