Default Unusual Shingle Pattern

Has anyone seen this type of shingle installation with exposed black area? It does appear that the shingles are not properly overlayed.

there are shingles manufactured to look like that John...GAF Grand Slate is one I'm sure there are others...jim

Supposed to look like slate. People pay extra for that
