How to Become a Certified Home Inspector in Montana


Home Inspector Certification (online & free for members):


Montana has just passed legislation SB-269. InterNACHI is approved for pre-licensing. SB-269 requires Home Inspectors in Montana to register with the Department of Labor and Industry. Visit Montana's website for home inspector licensing.
 
Each individual working under the registration will be required to meet the following criteria: 
  • successful completion of 40 hours of comprehensive home inspection training approved by the Department, or a passing grade on an approved national home inspection examination;
  • membership in an approved national association;
  • carry liability insurance, and a minimum of $100,000 in errors and omissions insurance; and
  • obtain personal workers’ compensation coverage or an independent contractor exemption certificate (ICEC).

Insurance for Inspectors

Radon Tester Certification in Montana (online & free for members)

   
 
Montana does not license radon measurement professionals. However, the Montana Department of Environmental Quality provides a list of nationally certified individuals to the public that have received radon measurement training approved by the National Radon Proficiency Program (NRPP), passed an exam, and have completed Continuing Education in radon. NRPP:
InterNACHI's free, online "Radon Measurement Professional Initial Training Course" is AARST-NRPP approved for both initial certification and Continuing Education. To complete all components of the NRPP Radon Certification, please visit their site for more information.  
 
NRSB:
InterNACHI's free, online Radon Measurement Professional Initial Training Course is NRSB-approved for initial certification. For those looking for NRSB continuing education, members should take the free, online "Advanced Radon Measurement Service Provider" course.
 
 
 
 

Real Estate Cards (free for members):

Montana-licensed real estate agents can attain free Continuing Education credits by following the directions on the real estate cards. Members can hand out these cards to real estate agents, which explain how to log into the free courses.
 
When an agent logs into a course and enters the member's ID number, the member is automatically emailed. The first slide of the course is the member's contact information. 
 
 
 
 
 

Home Energy Inspector Certification (online & free for members):

 
Become a Certified Home Energy Inspector. The online training and certification is free for members. No infrared, no blower door, and no additional training needed.
 
 
 
 

Home Energy Score Assessor (online & free for members):

The Home Energy Score is similar to a vehicle's miles-per-gallon rating, and any qualified inspector in the U.S. can generate a Home Energy Score in less than an hour. The Home Energy Score provides:
  • a score on a scale of 1 to 10; 
  • facts about the home and its energy use; and 
  • recommendations generated by the U.S. Department of Energy to improve the score and energy efficiency. 
  1.   To become a Home Energy Score Assessor, you must:
    1. be an InterNACHI-Certified Home Energy Inspector (online & free for members); 
    2. complete the 3D-house training (online & free for members);
    3. agree to participate in a Quality Assurance Plan with other local Home Energy Inspector(free for members); and
    4. email Jazmin to participate in the program. 

 
 
 

Wood-Destroying Organism Inspection (online and free for members)


 
The Montana Department of Agriculture issues licenses to sell or apply pesticides after training and testing to protect producers, consumers and the environment. For more information, please visit http://agr.mt.gov/Pesticide-License InterNACHI members can become certified by taking the Wood-Destroying Organism Inspection Course, which  is approved by the Montana Department of Agriculture.
