During a new construction inspection the building rep. stated to the buyers that as of june 1 interior garage doors no longer have to have self closing hinges. Has the code changed or what?

I'm not sure what the history is of the requirement across the country, but it appears to have been only applied sporadically in different jurisdictions. In the area of Maryland that I used to build in, it has been the code for many years. Here in Pennsylvania, which only this past year instituted uniform codes across the state, it has not been applied in most jurisdictions.

It is not a code of IRC 2003. But even if it isn't code, I still think that it's a good idea.

Chris what Mark said is good advice. Reccomend self closing garage door as safety upgrade if it is not required in your area.

I can tell you from experience that they pinch the hell out of little kids fingers, and I don’t recommend anything on them. If they have them okay, if not it’s still okay with me.

Nope.

Required by the UBC and other local municipalities, but not by the IRC.

Better the child has pinched fingers then die because of CO fumes coming from the garage.

Spring hinges not required here. If we decide we want to live in accident free homes our jobs will become impossible. I don’t know how anyone survived the 50’s and 60’s before bicycle helmets, knee guards, child proof caps, nerf balls, etc. I am 55 and managed to pinch my own finger in a sectional garage door. I invented a host of new cuss words. Wish I had written some down for later use but I couldn’t. My damn finger hurt too bad.

I am older then you and I too agree with many of your thoughts.
But to me self closing Doors to the home are a safety item.
We did not have garages attached to the home .
We did not have auto car starters.
We did not have to lock our house.
We now in many areas need the safety of the attached
garage so our safety is important.
In My area last year a gentleman took his son to day care came home with his daughter to leave with her his wife who was now home.
Decided to stop and have a coffee with his wife before he went to work.
Car in Garage door open car running ( cold weather ) .
Fortunately the neighbour across the road saw that he had not left for work came over and all three where unconscious call 911 .
They all survived but it was a close call .
A very similar thing happened but this time no neighbour all 4 dead.
Me I call door closer's a a safety item Like I do lots of other things .
Code be dammed I do not need to know I missed the obvious.

Roy,

I see the point in having hinged doors leading into the garage. I think it may have something to do with a regional thing. No one, I mean no one that I know actually parks their cars in the garage (except when a hurricane comes thru) and in the deep South, no one ever leaves that particular door open, too many things (critters, giant flying cockroaches, etc.) can wander into the house, plus we typically only have about 4 hours of spring before the hot weather begins and about 6 hours of fall. I routinely do homes where I am the first person in years to open a window in the home to check to see if it will open properly (a safety item) in the event of a house fire. I have yet to find a home here that has had spring hinged doors leading into the garage. But I get yours and everyone else’s point.

Must be a regional thing. Both my vehicles are garaged and most everyone I know does the same.

Us Californians like to keep our cars lookin' purdy ![icon_cool.gif](upload://oPnLkqdJc33Dyf2uA3TQwRkfhwd.gif)
