Aaron:

Simple.

Light fixture in the closet poses a fire risk. Recommend immediate relocation of fixture. Licensed electrician to perform repair.

keyless fixtures in closets are existing nonconforming and should be replaced as the bulbs can reach in excess of 400f, which can pose a fire

hazard

There are bare incandescent bulbs in the closets that you may wish to upgrade. These bulbs are sources of combustion and all stored material should be kept at least 6 inches away. Consider upgrading to a light fixture with a cover or fluorescent lighting. icon_idea.gif

The closet is lighted. The exposed bulb could be a fire hazard if stored items or other items come in contact with the exposed bulb. An 18" clearance is recommended. Also it is recommended that the bare bulb be covered with an approved bulb cover or upgraded to a fluorescent light fixture installed by a qualified licensed and insured electrician. icon_biggrin.gif

Wow thank you all. I do routinely write the up and always recommend the closed fixture and florescent but the other thread gave me even more info on the issue. I will stress it even more now that I know more of the possible concerns. http://www.nachi.org/bbsystem/viewtopic.php?p=29733&highlight=bulb#29733

I love NACHI forum for all the generous people that make it thrive.

I just had my recommendation to replace bare bulb lampholder with an approved light fixture challenged by a listing agent last week. Quoted book, chapter and verse of IRC 2000 edition and gave practical reasons why the installation was a safety hazard. Really handy to have current code books in the office for safety calls. I recommend HI’s get copies for areas they work in that have code enforcement. It helps to be able to back up your recommendations, even though we don’t perform “code compliance” inspections.

In addition to the possible fire hazard, I include a little blurb about the possibility of breaking the bulb while placing or removing boxes from the shelves. Particularly if the closet isn’t very deep or if the shelves are rather high on the wall. Could get an eye full of glass, unless you are wearing these icon_cool.gif

just because it’s common doesn’t make it right. those wire nuts were intended to have at least 2 wires in them. with only one you risk having them fall off and cause a huge hazard. I’d report that as a major safety risk and recommend it repaired immediately.

jay, your right and not only was it reported as such but I also recommended that all fire hazard material that was inside that closet be removed until such repair is done.

bravo mary. someone has to teach the DIY network watching junkies that just because the commercial says “you can do it…we can help” doesn’t mean that you can actually do it, nor does it mean that they will actually help. they usually give half a** info and guide you right into injury. it’s a good thing that all those orange vested individuals know which isle the first aid kits are. icon_rolleyes.gif
