Never heard of nor seen anything like this before. This is hilarous, as far as inovative structural supports. Did it work? Was it doing it's job?
How did you write this one up?

Were the inside floor boards bulging upward?

The floor above this was under a sofa and carpet, so I couldn’t tell if the floor was bulging or not. As far as doing it’s job, I don’t really know what it’s job is, since it is not under a beam or joist, but the floor boards. I can only guess as to what somebody had in mind here. If they intended to support the floor in that area, I think they should have put it under a supporting member. If you look at the first pic, there is a crack in the concrete behind the basket. There is a dug out area to the right where the old floor furnace is installed. Someone busted the concrete pier to install the floor furnace many years ago, and the beam is hanging over the open space. It has probably been like this for many years (the house was built in 1937).

There is no noticeable bulging or squeaks in the floor anywhere in the area around this.

Since the floor furnace has been abandoned, I am going to recommend that a proper supporting pier be installed under the beam.

It doesn’t look like using the baskets helped make it easier to get the concrete in place…

Yeah, I’ve been scratching my head wondering how someone got the concrete in there.
