Why the black iron?

My guess would be that there was a whole house filter there due to the bonding wire… In any case there is a problrm there. Black pipe should never be used on water lines, they should only be used on gas lines. If that pipe had ever been used as a gas pipe it would be contaminated with gas which is not something that people should be consuming.

Jason is quite correct that black pipe should not be used for potable water for the reason stated.


Perhaps this was a DO-IT-YOURSELF MAGNETIC WATER TREATMENT. The black pipe gives you an iron core. Now you just have to put some windings around it. It won't do much in the way of removing iron from the water but it is a popular beleif.

Also, I hope that nail is not the only support.

The black iron pipe is only for the sprinkling system.


The system is winterized. When in use the only water passing thru this goes out to the lawn. The main feed is below.


I dont see a problem with the pipe I just was curious why use black iron instead of copper. Maybe it helps the grass.
