Expansion Tank

I installed a expansion tank on my own water heater and the instructions said they wanted the tank at least 18 inches from the cold water inlet.

The house I inspected today had the expansion tank about 5 inches from the cold water inlet.

I didnt write it as a concern and was wondering what is the reason for the distance required.

Thanks

Dave

Dave, for starters, check with the manufacturer, different manufactures may have different or specific requirements, as well as minimum and optimum clearances.
