Kitchen counter problems

Yep. There is more than one problem with this house!

Each winter my kitchen counter moves away from the wall at least 1/2". I can stick my head into the cabinet and see light. Whoever installed the cabinets also ran a bead of caulk along the wall after they were installed so when they pull away the drips from the caulk are quite visible. The builder has no idea why this happens but thinks that caulking a metal strip that runs along the outside of the house between the cedar siding and the foundation will fix it. I think not. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Sandy

Why would you want to stick your head in the cabinet? Maybe I was right about the pot. Do you have clay or some other unstable expansive soil where ever you are?
