The 2019 Inspector Fair will be packed with advanced home inspection workshops. The convention will have three tracks: ancillary; advanced; and business and marketing. These workshops will be FREE for convention attendees. Boosting Your Credibility Using Infrared

Bill Fabian ☛ Location: Workshop Area 1

Infrared cameras help home inspectors perform better inspections. Thermal (infrared) imaging is an invaluable tool that helps inspectors identify issues with the HVAC and electrical systems, as well as detect moisture problems. It's also crucial for inspecting radiant floor and ceiling heat, and much more. This training will teach students about the science of thermography, how to operate an infrared camera, how to interpret results, and how to recognize the limitations of thermal imaging.

Advanced Plumbing Inspections

Lance Hayward ☛ Location: Workshop Area 2

Certified Master Inspector® and InterNACHI® member Lance Hayward of A Precision Home Inspection in Colorado Springs, Colorado, will instruct inspectors on how to successfully conduct a plumbing inspection according to the InterNACHI® Home Inspection Standards of Practice, as well as how to exceed those standards without inviting unwanted liability.

This class will teach home inspectors how to start, operate and grow a successful inspection business. We'll go through the process of creating a business plan and figuring out the potential of the business. This class will also help students understand how to market themselves using branding, SEO, and much more.

Advanced Detection of Cracks and Structural Indicators

Lon Henderson ☛ Location: Workshop Area 1

This presentation by a Certified Master Inspector® starts with properly identifying common structural defects observed at the foundation and structure of houses. You then will learn how to determine whether or not cracks and other readily visible evidence of structural movement warrant further evaluation by a structural engineer. And, finally, you’ll learn how to document your observations of structural defects in your home inspection reports.

Chimneys, Vents & Fireplaces

Jerry Isenhour ☛ Location: Barn A

This workshop covers the parts of the fireplace and chimney that should be inspected during a home inspection. We’ll discuss improper performance and maintenance issues, and how they reveal themselves at the chimney and fireplace casing. This will involve a review of the evolution of fireplace and chimney construction over the past several decades, including problems caused by original construction, latent defects, and deferred maintenance.

Marketing to Real Estate Agents

John Gillam ☛ Location: Workshop Area 2

Learn from a licensed real estate agent and broker how many agents work with inspectors, why many agents think home inspectors are “deal-killers,” and how to overcome this perception. Most importantly, discover how to become a valuable resource for brokers and build them into a part of your company’s network for lead-generation. Commercial Systems Inspection

In this two-hour workshop hosted by CCPIA – the Certified Commercial Property Inspectors Association ( – I’ll introduce inspectors to the key differences between residential and commercial electrical inspections. We’ll cover: commercial electrical system voltages; amperage ratings; locations; special electrical systems; devices and lighting; and electrical gear, testing, and inspection methods.

Legal Issues & Liability Insurance

Learn the general principles of home inspection risk management, typical claims filed against home inspectors, what steps to take in the event of a claim, and the importance of a good contract, with a Q&A session to follow.

Sewer Scope Inspections

Jim Krumm ☛ Location: Workshop Area 1

Learn how to make more profit per inspection by adding this ancillary inspection. This class is designed to show home inspectors the profit potential of adding sewer scoping to their ancillary services. It will give them a general idea of what a sewer scope inspection consists of, what the inspector should look for, and a basic understanding of sewer line materials and the common defects associated with different types of sewer lines. We’ll also discuss what to look for in a camera system.

The Next Level of Defect Recognition

Take your defect recognition skills to the next level. The conscientious home inspector must learn to recognize advanced defects based on evolving building science, new materials, and new applications and adaptations for those materials, especially when they’re used for reasons other than their intended purpose. In this class, we’ll cover flashing, stucco buckets, siding, and more.

Modern Marketing: How to Win Over Millennial Agents and Buyers

This workshop will give both new and experienced inspectors actionable tips, advice and best practices for increasing their digital presence and booking more home inspections. EIFS, Stucco, MSV & Water Intrusion

Ron Huffman ☛ Location: Workshop Area 1

In this class, the inspector will learn about the similarities and differences between EIFS, stucco, and adhered manufactured stone veneer. By the end, the inspector should be able to accurately identify whether the wall cladding is a type of EIFS or stucco. We'll also go over the common locations to look for installation errors, and illustrate the damage those errors may cause.

HVAC Inspection: Gas Furnaces & AC

Kenny Hart ☛ Location: Barn A

In the first part of this workshop, we'll cover the design, operation and installation of modern gas furnaces, including natural-draft gas furnaces and high-efficiency condensing furnaces, as well as their common defects. Then, we'll go over air-conditioning systems, with a review of the science behind cooling-only equipment, and their components, functions and operation, along with a checklist of common defects. We'll briefly discuss the differences between cooling-only and heat pump equipment, and how to identify them.
