Quick questions. When you run across an older house with a garage that looks like this, what do your narratives say about 2 hour? What year required , so on. Can someone tell me what year did the 2 hour rating in garage went in effect?
“There is no firewall separation between the garage and the residence. According to today’s commonly accepted construction standards, the garage should be separated from the residence and its attic area by not less than 1/2-inch gypsum board applied to the garage side. Garages beneath habitable rooms should be separated from all habitable rooms above by not less than 5/8-inch Type X gypsum board or equivalent. Where the separation is a floor-ceiling assembly, the structure supporting the separation should also be protected by not less than 1/2-inch gypsum board or equivalent. Openings between the garage and residence are required to be equipped with solid wood doors not less than 13/8 inches in thickness, solid or honeycomb core steel doors not less than 13/8 inches thick, or 20-minute fire-rated doors. We recommend installation of a functional fire barrier for safety reasons. We believe that functional smoke alarms are your best defense against death or injury by a fire and the local fire department can assist you with fire prevention advice.”

There is no 2 hour rating for a residential garage. Commercial, different story.
That is correct. Never say “the garage wall/ceiling is not fire rated”.
