PIPA and SOPA Violate White House Principles

Did you know that the Senate proposed PIPA and SOPA bill violates White House Principles.
To see details about these bills go to https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2012/01/how-pipa-and-sopa-violate-white-house-principles-supporting-free-speech

If these bills are passed free and open discussion on the web will be restricted. In fact this message board could be shut down.

"Corporate Right of Action
PIPA and SOPA also still allow copyright holders to get an unopposed court order to cut off foreign websites from payment processors and advertisers. As we *have continually highlighted](https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2011/12/blacklist-bills-ripe-abuse), copyright holders already can remove infringing material from the web under the DMCA notice-and-take down procedure. Unfortunately,** we’ve seen that*](https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2011/12/blacklist-bills-ripe-abuse)* power abused time and again](https://www.eff.org/takedowns). Yet the proponents of PIPA and SOPA want to give rights holders even more power, allowing them to essentially shut down full sites instead of removing the specific infringing content.
While this provision only affects foreign sites, it still affects Americans’ free speech rights. As Marvin Ammori *explained](http://ammori.org/2011/12/14/first-amendment-stop-online-piracy-acts-managers-amendment-some-thoughts/), “The seminal case of Lamont v. Postmaster](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lamont_v._Postmaster_General) makes it clear that Americans have the First Amendment right to read and listen to foreign speech, even if the foreigners lack a First Amendment speech right.” If history is any guide—and we’re afraid it is—we will see specious claims to wholesale take downs of legitimate and protected speech."

Free and open posting to this site would be subject to anyone getting a court order to shut this site down because someone posted a message that contained statements from copyrighted material. We do this all the time. To prevent the site being shut down all posting would have to be censored for plagiarism

Obama is only giving lip service.
Sopa is dead in the water thanks to all the protests however PIPA is also a big concern.

Last thing we need is censorship and government shutting down sites with no due process.

Not sure why a Canadian is posting this…

I posted it because these laws infringe on my freedoms as well as yours.
Check this link out http://www.cbc.ca/news/technology/story/2012/01/17/wikipedia-dark-protest.html It reports some of the actions and reactions that will screw up the free access to information on the internet.

Wikipedia and Craigslist shut down for 24 hours in protest.

Tell Congress: Please don’t censor the web!

I can’t believe we have to beg our legislators not to do something they have no constitutional authority to mess with.

Thanks Nick ,I copied this and posted on my FaceBook account.
May not be able to legally do that soon.

Now try and get through to Decker.

We get the internet here too… seems like it’s all over the developed world

A few are listening to whom they represent.

Sen. Roy Blunt announced this afternoon that he was removing his name from the Senate’s Protect IP Act, or PIPA, because he now considers the legislation flawed and in need of work.

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., also withdrew as a co-sponsor of the Senate legislation while two House members dropped from the list of sponsors of a House companion bill titled the Stop Online Piracy Act, better known as** SOPA****.**

Reps. Lee Terry, R-Neb., and Ben Quayle, R-Ariz., dropped their names from the list of SOPA sponsors on Tuesday.

Many are still not, including this idiot.
The Senate legislation still has more than 35 sponsors, among them Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., who is in Cuba on a congressional trip and unavailable for comment.

screen shot from today

We put up the black screen to help the cause. Craigslist, Google, and Wikipedia did similarly.

How about Chris Dodd or dork, whatever his name is?

Looks like we’re winning, but it’s a battle that shouldn’t have had to been fought. The powers of the Federal government are very limited in the Constitution. These bozos shouldn’t even have stuff like this on their agenda.

I see Google has a black screen over its logo.

The thing to remember is if the government decides it does not like what you are saying they could simply shut down your site.

Think it would not happen under such a law and you are a fool.

Correct.

Here is a great animation explaining some of what would happen.
