Formstone

I run into this formstone facade on the front of city row homes occasionally. Quite popular at one time it was applied to both repair crumbling brick fronts and simply as a desirable appearance.

This two story and attic has also had the roof raised to provide headroom for a third floor.

A ‘revivalist’ attitude amongst young owners in some neighborhoods is busy stripping the formstone off houses to revert to the original all brick appearance.

Although the brick is in good condition on this house across the street, many times stripping the formstone will reveal serious defects that it was intended to hide.
