I frequently notice inspectors on our site who apparently come from something other than construction backgrounds AND read articles in fancy magazines telling how something is to be built rather than simply going to a quality custom builder OR your local code inspector for that info.
Here are 2 photo’s of a tall custom deck on a lot that is flat for about 12’ behind the house then turns into steep ski slope type lot. In 1995 or 1996 the house on the next lot over made national news when the fill dirt gave out and the brand new house slid off its foundation and collapsed.
