What Year Did Smoke Det's Become Required In Bedrooms?

house permitted in 2001.

the only SDs were in the halls outside the BRs.

I think sometime in the 90’s NEC req’d putting them in the BRs…

Smoke detector codes are written by the NFPA.

Florida: Smoke detectors must be installed in accordance with NFPA 72 for household warning systems.

The following smoke alarm requirements are for 47 states submitted to the USFA, as of May 3, 2010.

1993 I believe when NFPA 72 came out with it, but when any jurisdiction adopted it may vary by quite a few years.

If it was okay in 2001 to underprotect the home … what difference would it make in an inspection performed today? Just curious.

In a new home it is mandatory in most jurisdictions and states now.

In an older home, don’t amount to a hell of beans unless you want to push recommended upgrades.
Just like fire sprinklers, new homes have them and the old homes don’t.

James,

It has a lot to do with who is or should be responsible for paying to make it right.

And it’s also good to know if a developer or builder f’d up, as there are a few hundred homes in the development in Vero Beach, FL.
