Flue Connection

First time I have encountered this type of flue connection, appears to be some type of baffle system. The entire flue was rusted with voids, and I was reading CO2 levels with my momoxide detector. Note the open bottom of the “Box”. Any ideas for this one? The boiler is 76 years old, steam system, recommended replacement.

I believe you should call it out to be replaced.

worth repeating.

I recommended replacement of the entire system. Still curious regarding the purpose of the “box”, maybe a prehistoric damper?

The “box” as you refer appears to be a draft diverter. many vintage heating systems and hot water heaters did not have a built in draft diverter.

Russ,
Thank you for the response. So, the bottom is supposed to be open?

Yup.
