Intake air to furnace

Hi all,

What is your take on this installation with the intake pipe not taking air from the exterior but just from the attic air?

Also, I’ve never seen the exhaust insulated, is there a reason for that?

Thanks,

Tom

They often grab attic air here. The idea is that it’s not getting ice cold air from the exterior. My furnace states it should be 1 foot above the insulation. The insulation on the pipe is to help reduce condensation in the pipe.

Did the attic communicate directly with the outside air?

They are supposed to condensate hence the reason why schedule 40 is used.
See no purpose to this I mean they did have a drain pan under the thing ?
Never see the standing up at attention in attics.

The air intake is fine there because it is not part of a tight interior envelope.

They are supposed to condensate hence the reason why schedule 40 is used.

Air intake should be fine and there is no reason to insulate the schedule 40 pvc as it is intended to condensate.
More concerned with if they have a drain pan as I never see standups in attics.
If the attic is vented then the freon lines should be insulated.

The attic has soffit and ridge vents.

Thanks Robert!
One of my thoughts was that insulation particles would be sucked in by the intake and that wouldn’t be a great thing right?

Ease up on the thinking gona cause a blood clot;-)

Will do Charley!
Just sittin here watching my O’s and having a brew, not much thinking required!
