Can anyone say for sure if this type of column is (or is not) intended for permanent use?

Saying "for sure" would require knowledge about what code requirements are for permanent steel pipe columns, the specs for the item pictured, and the load it is bearing. All of that would need to be addressed by a structural engineer before any definitive pronouncement could be made, and is beyond the scope of a standard home inspection.

Thanks for the reply William. So if I see one of these in a home I make no comments in my report regarding it?

The reason I am asking about it is because this one is in a home where the original one was removed so they could add a door, then this one was used as the replacement about 2 to feet from where the original was. The inspector in his report (about 4 years ago) said it should be replaced.
