lally columns

Do you always write up as a deficiency temporary lally columns used for support? I have seen them on homes where they have been there for 40 years and it hasn’t caused a problem.

thanks,

I write them up as a temporary installation method and recommend they should be permanently installed. Just because it has been incorrectly installed for 40 years doesn’t make it right.

Adjustable steel columns.

Some Lally columns are rated ok by the building code, the cement filled ones are fine.

You would need to check codes as mentioned.

In Canada we have four manufactures of telescopic adjustable columns who have submitted proof that they meet all structural requirements. Therefore for us, it is important and necessary to check/verify that the column has a label to distinguish it from a temporary column.
