Not yet, and Jeffrey, go piss in someones else's pool. It seems if you don't know the answers you disqualify the questions. That's not very manly.

Yes, I meant its open for everyone.

Paul's thoughtful and pertinent questions do, as well as help me be a better inspector.
This, people, is a good example of why we, on the awards committee, do these Question Of The Week. (My bolded and underlined above)

Thanks, Steve.

PROHIBITED LEDGER ATTACHMENTS

The ledger board attachment to cantilevers are prohibited. In such cases, a free-standing deck or engineering design is required.

Jeffery, I am having a discussion with a builder. I know that it can not be attached to a cantilever. The builder says it can be if the cantilever is not a majority of the ledger attached to the house. What say you? Thanks, John

Unfortunately, we can no longer attach (computer) files on the awards threads (wonder why that is?)... So because of that, you will need to read your copy of the AWC DCA-6 pages 15, 17. This document is the information from which the Code is based upon, and it is quite clear, and very SPECIFIC in it's WORDING (which is why I push so hard on these questions for specificity)... to point, a LEDGER is prohibited from attaching to a cantilever, thus a Free-standing deck, a Non-ledger deck, or other engineered attachment is required.

Perhaps this helps...

I suspect that your contractor may be referring to one of these but using contractor speak as opposed to the proper terminology. I have seen many a deck built with the Ledger being built around a chimney or bay window (acting as a joist) and if done properly are acceptable, BUT, that technically falls under the "engineered attachment" (above) and needs to be, yes, engineered!

Hey Hulk, its still called a ledger.

Maybe I should add that almost everyone gets into the spirit of the questions and seems to have a good time. In the age of Google finding answers to almost anything is instantaneous, a technical misquote or different use of term is easy to happen considering we are covering an entire continent.

I stand by my questions knowing I am not now or ever was perfect so in regards to that I take any criticism seriously but always consider the source before I act.

The questions stay as is.

P.S. Larry... I hope you're feeling better today. I only mentioned you above as I know you are very knowledgable about decks, and are very "fluent" with the AWC DCA-6, it's content and application. That's all.

Last time then I'm done... You can't correctly answer a question that doesn't have a correct answer!
