Welcome to another round of Questions of The Week!

Questions of the week:

Introduction and requirements:

A member of the Award Committee will post a question, at a random day/time.

A competing member may make one post per question thread to answer the question and the member's winning entry must have all parts of the question answered completely in that one post. Editing your one answer post allowed will result in disqualification.

Winnings will be limited to no more than 6 times in a given year, the objective is to allow as many Members a chance to win as possible.
Any disregard to the above and divulging the correct answers
or giving hints/references will cause a disqualification.

back in the 19th century, when indoor plumbing was introduced, water was generated by a hand pump. The hand pump had but one trick: producing cold water. And since most people were – and still are — right-handed, the pump was placed on the right side of the sink

It should have been B or E..
Co·ri·o·lis ef·fect

an effect whereby a mass moving in a rotating system experiences a force (the Coriolis force ) acting perpendicular to the direction of motion and to the axis of rotation. On the earth, the effect tends to deflect moving objects to the right in the northern hemisphere and to the left in the southern and is important in the formation of cyclonic weather systems.

Yeah I saw that. That effect applies to "earthly" physics, not something small like a sink or toilet. Hurricanes, yes.
I am Bart Simpson & you are Lisa!
or.... am I on Candid Camera.

Quote:
Just like Lisa explains to Bart, the Earth is subject to Coriolis forces, which determine how moving objects are deflected off the inside of rotating objects—wheels, circular containers, those kinds of things. Applied to Earth's rotating sphere, the Coriolis effect accounts in part for why, say, hurricanes and cyclones rotate the way they do. (The storms rotate counterclockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and clockwise in the Southern.)

So what does account for the varying ways that toilets flush and drains drain? The design of the objects that do the flushing and the draining, for the most part. (Not to mention things like buildup and debris, which can affect the shape water takes as it's moving through pipes.) Here's Neil deGrasse Tyson—he who plucked Pluto from the status of "planet"—busting another misconception:
Neil deGrasse Tyson @neiltyson

Toilet Bowls drain however they're designed to circulate water. It’s irrelevant whether you live above or below the equator.

There you have it. Another myth, going down the ... well, you know.

The Coriolis effect must be taken into account in extreme long range rifle shooting. I don't think it will affect your toilet bowl rotation or your pee stream.
