Bruce Decker will present on radon and the current issues it presents. The presentation will include:
· What is radon;
· What are the health effects of radon;
· The health impact and fatality burden of radon;
· The mechanism of radon entry into buildings and other factors which influence indoor radon concentrations;
· The findings of Health Canada’s cross country radon survey;
· A discussion on the radon potential map of Canada and Ontario;
· The revised 200 Bq/m3 mitigation action level recently lowered from 800 Bq/m3;
· The testing requirements and limitations established in Health Canada’s measurement guidelines and the requirement for testers to be C-NRPP certified;
· The challenges and liabilities surrounding radon testing during property transactions;
· The Tarion radon warranty claim for newly constructed homes (of which Mr. Decker has personally received compensation);
· Changes to the National and Provincial building codes as they relate to radon resistant construction and the pitfalls and potential failures of these code requirements to control radon;
· Status of Bill 96 An Act to raise awareness about radon, provide for the Ontario Radon Registry and reduce radon levels in dwellings and workplaces; and
· Basic radon mitigation measures.
After this presentation the attendees will have a clear understanding of radon and the requirements surrounding its assessment, and mitigation. The misconception of “radon not being a problem in our area” will be dispelled. It will be clear why all areas of Ontario are at risk of elevated radon levels and why all buildings must be tested.
Bruce is a C-NRPP and NRPP certified radon measurement provider. His designations as a Registered Occupational Hygiene Technologist and a Certified Building Science Specialist give him expert insight into all aspects of radon.
