Commercial class in your state?

Attention all chapters interested in doing a commercial class, get in touch with me, I will coordinate with ITA and Nick, and come teach in your town.

You da man Mike.

Great course Guys!

Mike I am sure the locals here in the Chicago land area would love to have this class

Toronto is ready - and I am confident that we can fill the class.
Please look at our discussion here: http://www.nachi.org/forum/showpost.php?p=177744&postcount=80

Mike are you teaching this one??

If everbody gets all the T’s crossed and the I’s dotted, I’m good to go, we had some last minute issues that slowed things down, but with luck, all will be figured out and dates set etc… very soon, lookin forward to it.

I thought the class was good, but could have used more technical information. I do not have great knowledge on commercial applications, and still do not even after the class. I would suggest involving more details on commercial applications used, not that we could inspect them ourselves, as we would probably just hire subs, but so we could be familiar with what we are getting paid to report on.

What I took from the course is that a majority of the commercial applications are above our level and education and should require hiring a sub to inspect it. The items we are able to inspect is stuff like safety and structure. I think the course would be better off with multiple instructors who each specialize in different aspects of commercial construction. No offense to Mike, who is obviously well seasoned in both residential and commercial inspections. But since commercial inspections do require specialists, maybe the course should utilize specialist instructors who are a little more familiar with the material.

The last day turned into a vendor fest. Now that was the free 3 day course in Denver so I don’t know if that happens in every course, but I would hope not.

To be honest, if I would have paid for the course in my area, I would have been a little dissapointed. But it was in Denver, which is a great town, so at least I had the chance to explore it a little.

I’m not trying to deter anyone from taking the course, but just trying to give some input as to what the course really is and how it could be improved.

Since I have already booked for New Hampshire, you have triggered my interest.

That is unfortunate and hope for myself that traveling over 200 miles to get there that I will not suffer your symptoms.

I took the course in 2005 and never regretted it. Does it answer all the questions? no. Does it set you on the right path to start expanding your business into the commercial market, definitely.

This course is not going to qualify you to start inspecting every commercial building out there, like restaurants, old mill buildings and such but it will point you in the right direction to start somewhere, for me it is multi family apartment buildings, warehouses, office condos ETC.

You have to start somewhere and this course will help, so much so that I am going to attend it again in NH just to reaffirm what I have already learned.

Marcel,

Since I am not completly familiar with commercial construction, I did not know what to expect. I just don’t have an overwhelming confidence to go inspect a commercial building after the course. I suppose I just expected more. Vague I know, but that’s how I feel.

The course just seemed a little unorganized. We went through a ton of slides with some getting an explanation and some just being described as over our heads and not to worry about them. Then, on about the last day, we were finishing our slides and I noticed at the end of one of the books we received was a chapter full of the slides we were going through. If I had known in advance the slides were in the book, I would have taken notes. But this was not explained.

I pointed that out to several other clas participants and they were as surprised as I was. There were a few of us that weren’t impressed and even dissappointed with the class.

The class did help shed some light on the HOME inspection business which is nice.

I suppose I wanted to get more details on the report, instead of just being handed one in the textbooks with little or no explanation.

Let me just put it this way, I am taking courses at the local community college which I beleive are the way to go.

I will say the textbook you receive are amazing. If you can read through them, there is most of the info you need, so the books are the best thing I took from the course, but the books need to be self taught as no instructor could be expected to go through that much.

Another positive was the explanation of the commercial client and your fee structure. Good info there.

I feel somewhat rotten for putting parts of the course down, especially all the work Nick and Mike went through. They did take great care of us with lunch, coffee and doughnuts.

I just want my fellow NACHI members to be aware of what the class is. After all, sharing is caring.

Good explanation Dylan;

Sometimes some of us will tend to increase our expectations of some things that has gone beyound the reality of the matter.

Good luck with your courses.

I am looking into attending the ITA commercial class in Tampa FL the end of May. If you were to offer a class anywhere in the south, from Houston TX to Orlando FL, I would make it point to attend. Here in the Gulfport / Biloxi Mississippi area, home sales have slowed considerably due to no new insurance policies being written. Everything is now going through the MS wind pool, which is not very affordable. Businesses, however, are returning. Many of the Realtors I have spoken with have said commercial inspectors are in need. Definitely a market I would like to tap into, but like my HI business, I don’t want to accept a job without knowing everything about it first.
So long story short, please consider somewhere in the south for a class.
Thanks!

Hi Marcel,

I am really looking forward to this Commercial Building Inspectors Course! You will find that Mike Nelson is an outstanding speaker, and that he really knows the subject matter.

I really enjoyed it, and I am sure that even though it will be the “Second course” for me this year that I will learn something new from this one.

As soon as the dates for this course or “solidified” I will post them immediately!

I look forward to meeting you!

Regards,

Mike
