Default How close should shingles on garage roof come to step flashing

Having my house re-roofed. Plan to have new step flashing installed where garage roof meets side wall of house. Using google, it looks like I should leave at least a 1" game between the clapboard siding and the shingles.

Would you suggest more? I'm in NH so get lots of snow some winters.

And, I can not find this anywhere - How close should the shingles on the garage roof come to the 90 degree bend in the step flashing? My current shingles are right up to it and some curl up forming a tent.

Thanks
