Read the article titled "Inspector Marketing: Leave a Gift Card with Your Tip". I really like the idea of having something printed up that actually looks like a gift card, such as a mini-envelope or card cover that has an image of a bow on the front. Definitely will not end up in the trash. People will either keep it or pass it along to someone who has a use for it.

I only knew of 2 types of underlayment before reading this, ( felt and ice and water shield), but now realize there are 3 different types. I also now know far to overlap the felt on a roof 4:12 or lower and why you overlap it this way.

Inspection & Writing Assignment:

No major defects found with roof after inspection from the interior side. There are no visible signs of current or past leaks.

Roofing systems do not last forever and require maintenance and updating. It's best to have an inspection done by a licensed roofing professional to get a better idea of life expectancy and estimated cost of a new roofing system.

For this essay I studied the image demonstrating ice damming. The image relayed a good understanding of how ice damming is formed when snow build up melts and refreezes causing an ice blockage at the eaves trapping water behind it.

Research & Writing Assignment:

There are many ways to search for roof defects inside of an attic. One great way to find sources of leakage and potential fungus is on the roof sheathing. There may be signs of penetration on the roof sheathing that show a dark stain. This is a defect that can potentially cause mold.

Inspection & Writing Assignment:

The inspection was done from a step ladder at the eaves. I did not walk on roof due to what appeared to be unsafe conditions of the roof covering. Noted was Asphalt shingles with a 4:12 roof slope. Upon inspection, I observed that the majority of shingles if not all showed evidence of damage, cracks, breakage, granular loss and some of the shingles were missing. Roof is in need of correction and a licensed roofing contractor should be contacted. Moisture penetration is probable and I will follow up in attic space to verify leakage coming from the roof.
